Канцлери Німеччини та Австрії вступили у суперечку з Жозепом Боррелем під час останнього саміту Європейського Союзу у березні. Під час закритої дискусії керівники обох країн висловили незадоволення щодо політики європейського дипломата щодо конфлікту в Газі, але на публіці все ж згодилися на заклик до припинення вогню на Близькому Сході.
Канцлер Німеччини сперечався з Боррелем
Головне зауваження від канцлерів Німеччини та Австрії полягало в тому, що Жозеп Боррель не може говорити від імені їхніх країн щодо ситуації в Газі. Вони наголосили на необхідності виражати єдину позицію всього Європейського Союзу, а не індивідуальні думки дипломата.
Роль Жозепа Борреля полягає у тому, щоб представляти Європейський Союз у питаннях зовнішньої політики та політики безпеки та висловлювати єдину позицію країн-членів. Проте, канцлери вважали, що він переходить межі своїх повноважень, висловлюючи власні погляди на конфлікт.
Відносини між Жозепом Боррелем та керівництвом Німеччини погіршилися вже після прес-конференції в Москві у 2021 році. Під час цієї події Боррель не відреагував на сумніви російського міністра закордонних справ Лаврова щодо отруєння Алексея Навального. Це призвело до погіршення відносин між Берліном та Боррелем.
Незважаючи на суперечки, на саміті було прийнято рішення закликати до припинення вогню в Газі, що свідчить про рідкісний випадок одностайності серед 27 країн ЄС у стосунках з Близьким Сходом.
